Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can I get a homestead exemption?

A resident who is 65 or older who has lived in West Virginia for the past 2 years qualifies for the homestead exemption. Please note that you must apply for the exemption, it does not automatically apply when you turn 65.

Why are the boundaries wrong on the tax map?

While we strive to improve the accuracy of the maps every year, sometimes we do not have sufficient data to map your parcel correctly. If you can provide us with documentation to correct the mapping, we will do so.

Why does my assessment show vehicles I have not owned for a couple of years?

Always remember that assessments are for what you owned July 1st of the previous year. Example: 2022 taxes are what you owned July 1, 2021. If you see incorrect vehicles, call us. Remember, the only way to ensure your assessment is correct is to file it every year.

My house is showing up on your map on my neighbor’s property. Does that mean they own my house?

No. Tax maps are not legal boundary maps. They are to be used for taxing purposes only. They are there for us to get in the general area to know what to assess. Law states that these cannot be used as surveys or to show legal parcel boundaries. We strive to improve them every year, but sometimes we cannot map them correctly due to insufficient data.

How do I change the name on my property?

You will need to file a legal document, such as a will or deed, with the County Clerk’s office. We cannot change the name on a parcel without a legal document on file.
